We're excited to announce that Wayfarers Studio Program is now offering teaching artists from outside of New York an opportunity to have a short-term studio in Brooklyn.

Wayfarers is on a mission.

Magic on magic on magic.
— MARIANNE LORRAINE, ARTS IN BUSHWICK

Wayfarers is an artists run project in the Bushwick / Bed Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn founded in 2011. Our mission is to provide artists with affordable studio space, a supportive critical community, and an alternative exhibition space that bypasses the commercial art market. In its first five years, Wayfarers has provided studios to almost 100 artists, and our gallery has hosted over 50 exhibitions of emerging artists from the US and around the world.

The Evans Studio for Teaching Artists

The T-ART program offers short term memberships  (1 week – 1 month)  for Artist/ Educators. Private studio space at Wayfarers is now available year-round on rotation ONLY for artists who teach.  This residency would enable you to have a Brooklyn-based home away from home for your studio practice – a clean, safe, supportive space for developing new work, installing existing work for studio visits with curators or other artists, or even hosting a pop-up exhibition in New York City. As art school alumnae, Wayfarers’ Advisory Board Members have tremendous respect and admiration for dedicated Artist / Educators. We are thrilled to be able to enhance your research efforts towards both your classes and studio practice by providing space and development opportunities for teaching artists to work or to present their work while they’re visiting New York.

Studio Space and Facilities

The Evans Studio is 8' x 12' with clean, white wall space, concrete floor, and a deep storage shelf. Wayfarers will provide 24 hour access, wifi throughout the building, a complete wood shop with a Sawstop table saw, silkscreen facilities, exposure table, spray booth, and a kitchen/commons area.

The support and love extended to me by Wayfarers shaped the work that I developed and directly led to my success.
— JOHN ORTH, ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2013

 Supportive Community

As a non-profit artist run space, everyone plays an essential part in the community. From organizing and participating in critiques to maintaining facilities, every member of Wayfarers directly makes the program run. In its first five years, Wayfarers has provided studios to almost 100 artists, and our gallery has hosted over 50 exhibitions of emerging artists from the US and around the world. Working at wayfarers will place you in supportive relationships with like-minded artists.

Gallery Proximity

The on-premise gallery is a central part of Wayfarer's operation. This space provides a dialogue between exhibiting artists, studio members, and the local community. As a visiting Teaching Artist, your studio will be steps away from the gallery. T-ARTs are also eligible to access this 400 square foot space between exhibitions for documenting work and setting up installations.

Visiting Critics and Curators

Our T-ART packages include studio visits with our network of established critics and curators. This provides opportunities to get critical feedback from professional guests. Through these individual studio visits, members are introduced to professionals with diverse skills and perspectives.

Studio Assistance

Wayfarers will often be able to provide T-ART members with a studio or research assistant for several hours a week during their residency. This provides our Teaching Artists the ability to expedite projects and produce work that needs extra hands.

I would do it again in a New York minute!
— ROBERT BUBP, T-ARTIST, 2018
